Bright orb with a beam of light shooting straight up out of it

We went for a night swim in our pool around midnight. We were looking at the stars when I saw a really bright star in the middle of a triangle of more dimly lit stars. Then the bright “star” slowly started getting bigger, fast enough that I didn't have time to point it out.

Suddenly it was about half the size of a full moon, but it still looked like a fuzzy star, just bigger. Then a beam of white light shot straight up out of it. The beam of light was very thin, crisp looking, not hazy. It just shot straight up out of the big fuzzy star like orb, then the whole thing immediately vanished.
