Bright light, tubular V shaped visible against blue sky

Operating a marked police car, stopped at 4 way stop sign. Looked up the street to my left through open driver window, my eye was attracted to something above me at about (11 o'clock high) I looked up and saw a solid-colored light made out of tubular shaped construct. It was a bright color such as green, blue or orange. I don't recall the color anymore but lean toward blue. I stared at it for several seconds trying to figure out what I was seeing. There was no sound and it's altitude was about 300 feet, I believe. I thought my eyes were seeing an optical illusion, so I looked away and stared at the unlit floor of the passenger side. I looked up and it was still there. I looked around for a person so I could ask them if they also saw it. There was no one and that wasn´t uncommon. I rubbed my eyes and looked again. This time almost as soon as I confirmed it was still there it went up and backwards at an incredible speed. It did not fade away it flew away. I made the right turn drove the one block to my house ran inside and immediately told my wife. As I took my dinner break my wife and I discussed it. She said she believed me because of the look on my face. We decided that I would never say anything due to the possibility my police Dept may suspend me. I was a police officer for 35 years and this was about my 17th year. During the last 3 years of my career, I started telling close friends and relatives. They all said they believed me which gave me comfort. However I don't think all of them would have back at that time. I have thought long and hard about saying this outside of my circle. Is it alien life or can it be rationally explained? I tend to believe the latter.
