Sighted starbord aft flightdeck of CVN-70 Carl Vinson. Roughly 50mi off the coast of Hawaii

Roughly Between Febuary 4st and Febuary 21st of 2003 en route from California to Hawaii. I was standing flightdeck Patrol watch on CVN-70 Carl Vinson Aircraft Carrier with two other airmen between the hours of 12am and 4am. We were all checking Chains on aircraft at the starboard aft of the ship behind the tower. I looked out onto the ocean because we were supposed to be pulling into port in Hawaii (but we never actually wound up pulling in to Hawaii and wound up in Guam because of needing smallpox innoculations before going on to southeast asia) in a couple of days and the islands were close enough to see the glow of land on the horizon.

What we witnessed was roughly 50ft wide and roughly 500ft out from the boat hovering alongside the aft of the ship at roughly 300ft off of the water. So slightly above our heads, with the flightdeck of the carrier being 70ft out of the water.

The object was reflective and was shining the ships orange floodlights back at us but I was also able to see through the object and see the stars behind it. The object was oval in apperance, smooth, and made no discernable sound or light.

Once I pointed at it and drew the attention of the other two airmen it darted away from the ship at an amazing speed. (No aircraft that I know of can move that fast, with no sound, no thrusters or engines, and no lightlines or blur) It stopped a distance away and started moving in an orbit/tight circular pattern and then would dart a short distance then orbit again and then dart and orbit until it made a triangular shape. Once the triangle was made it moved farther up and away from the ship and proceeded to do the pattern again and then again in a zigzag pattern as it moved up and away from the ship until it disappeared into the clouds. This occured id say within a minute. Unfortunatly I cannot tell how high up the clouds were that night I will take a guess and say between 9000 and 15000 feet.

Once gone I was dumb struck and looked over at the two other airmen that were feet away from me. One was slack jawed and could not speak. The other dropped to their knees and prayed to god (why the hell would you show me this.) over and over agian.

We decided not to call in what we had just witnessed because none of us wanted to look like we were daffy and/or be locked up in the brig for seeing something we were not supposed to. I did go to the Flight boss on duty at the base of the tower and asked if there had been any weird blips on the radar or if anyone had reported anything weird. The answer was no so we left it at that and walked away from the tower and never talked about it ever again. Looking back I wish I had reported what I had seen so that there was documentation. I am doing my due diligence now though.
