Like a Meteor but it was larger, slower, brighter and more colorful.

I was driving and heading toward the south and I thought at first that I was looking at a meteor coming down with a 30 to 45 degree angle towards the west. The colors changed from white to purple to deep purple to red as it disappeared. It was larger than a meteor. I thought that it was about to hit the ground.
