'Star' close to The Plough fades to nothing

I like to gaze at the small patch of sky visible from my backyard and I'm reasonably familiar with the star patterns as they change throughout the year.

Looking in the direction of The Plough I noticed a star in close proximity to that constellation, in a location where none would be seen. It was approximately the same brightness as the stars comprising the Plough.

I watched it for about five seconds as it dawned on me that it can't be a star, whereupon it gradually faded to nothing, taking about another three seconds to do so.

I was hoping to see it move but it remained absolutely stationary for the whole time.

No big deal as sightings go, but I thought I'd commit it to posterity in case someone else saw it too and can provide more information.
