randomly moving starlike shape

Looking up into the sky to the west, I noticed a figure indistinguishable from a star traveling in a straight line (from north to south). Then, as it approached other stars, it began its random path with sharp angular moves. After about 5 or 6 such linear movements, it departed the area in a straight line to the north.
