blinking light vanishes into atmosphere

I was out walking with my daughter this morning and we were looking at the big full moon when I noticed what I first thought was a star. It was a tiny pin-prick of light, but it started blinking on and off, slowly at first, and then faster on-off-on-off and then it looked like it kept going higher and higher into the atmosphere until I could no longer see it. This is the second time I have witnessed something vanish by traveling too high for the naked eye to see.
