2 lights traversing sky at breakneck speed

On the night of june 30, 2003, me and a friend of mine we doing some stargazing from the local university library, which due to it's architectural design (a slanted grass-roof) provides a nice place to chill out for a while.

We had already noticed a few shooting stars and satellites, when suddenly we spotted 2 lights which were maybe as bright as the the brightest stars, which travelled from east to west, traversing the part of the sky overhead (where we first caught them) to somewhere over the horizon, where they dissolved into the light-pollution which we have in this part of the country. The thing that amazed us about it was the speed at which they travelled.. they traversed the part of the sky (about 1/3 of the firmanent) in which we could see in a matter of 3 or 4 seconds, one following the other a little bit behind it, a little off to the left. The altitude at which they were is hard to determine, but they were definately at a few kilometers' heigth. The colour seemed to be a bit orangy. They looked like they were sortof disklike, since they didn't look like regular stars, which to the naked eye resemble pinpoints of light. These objects however seemed to have at least some kind of mass to it, since the light it emitted seemed to come from some sort of illuminated body of sorts.

I haven't got a clue what we saw that night, but i'm sortof hoping that other people saw it as well.
