Characteristics: Aura or haze around object, Left a trail

Driving through neighbor-hood we observed a red glowing ball of light in the sky traveling at a slow speed. It appeared to be about 1/4 miles in the air. It traveled approximately 300 yards and disapeared. It resembled a flare, however I know the difference. Very wierd!
