Cluster of lights came in from west, stopped changed directions multiple times before flying off into space in an instant.

It was the summer before started high school in 1994. My mom allowed my brother and I to stay up late to watch a meteor shower. The 3 of us laid on a blanket in the yard and had seen several meteors and several jets/ aircraft over the course of an hour or so.

Out of the western sky just over the horizon, I detected movement out of the corner of my eye. At first I dismissed it as another jet, because it was clearly not a meteor. It was a tight cluster of lights moving about the same altitude and speed of a jet airliner at first. But as it got closer I noticed it had no discernable shape or pattern of lights. I can only recall that there were several different colors of lights, and they were moving around, but they stayed in a cluster and moved as one. It was totally silent. We were all saying "what is that thing??? Oh my god.. Etc.."

After several seconds passed it was almost directly over us but slightly south. It was maybe 2,000 feet up. It came to a stop and hovered for a few seconds then quickly moved back, then stopped and hovered. It continued moving back and forth erratically, hovering briefly then going a different direction for about 30 seconds. Then it ping ponged around for a second as if it were "winding up" before shooting off into space in a fraction of a second. It took off so fast like it was shot from a cannon into the stars. I remember it vividly and it makes the hair stand up on my body when I think about it. I remember watching the local news the next day and they did a short mention of it.
