Hazy white light that appeared to turn headlights on

Object was going from west to east and looked like a hazy white light. All of a sudden the light projected in front of it and continued to grow longer and wider in front of it. At that time we could see what appeared to be the actual lights on the object. We could see 2 lights but weren’t sure if the object divided into 2 or not. The projecting light slowly diminished and the object disappeared.
