I was checking to make sure that my garage was locked when I looked up and saw an eraser sized radiant orb flowing under and over cloud

I was in my driveway after some guests left my home. I was checking to make sure that my garage was locked when I looked up and saw an eraser-sized, radiant metallic orb flowing under and over the cloud cover. I initially assumed it was a particularly bright star that appeared to be in motion because of the clouds, but I was able to triangulate it's motion against the static positions of three other stars. I watched in awe for 30 seconds or so before it rose above the cloud cover, so I could no longer see it. I then got my phone out to try to record it when it came back down but it did not do so. It sounds silly to say, but I started talking and asking if it were still there. It did not return to view. After recording for 30 seconds, I put my phone away so I did not lose my night vision. I asked again if it were there, and then suddenly a cloud patch illuminated as though there were heat lightning originating there (it could be that was all it was if the conditions were right for that?). No engine noise.
