My brother and I saw a large reddish-white light over the lake. It increased in brightness and then shot off to the east extremely fast

My brother and I were preparing to drive into Durham, which is about 100 miles from my house. We noticed a large extremely bright white light out over the lake. As we looked at it and wondered what it was it began to get brighter and brighter as it turned to a reddish-white color. It then sped off to te east at an extremely fast speed and was gone.
