Red Light balls hovering, splitting, hovering and then vanishing with no change in elevation for 5 minutes.

Walked onto porch to watch fireworks in the distance for New Years but these light balls were red out in the distance possibly down towards Lansdale or Harleysville, PA, and they were just sitting there for a lengthy period of time without any chance in altitude. these red lights would just sit there and then randomly split and still hover, and eventually go out after 45 seconds to a minute.

They were not lanterns or flares. First there was 5 then 7 and then they started vanishing and coming back until there was only 1.
