Iridescent ball of light

My mom has told this story throughout my life. I'm still curious about it. It was back in the day before car seats for kids. I was sitting on her lap in the front passenger seat of the car and Dad was driving. Mom says I was around three years old, so maybe 1964/65? Can't remember the month, but mom says we weren't in winter coats.

Leaving my grandparents house in West Hempstead, NY, after dark, as we pulled on to the main street out of their neighborhood, mom says she saw a ball of light way up high in the sky. She pointed it out to my dad, who also saw it, and agrees with her description of the event. She says it was dropping down, getting bigger and bigger over about a minute of time. Nearer and nearer to the car.

She said it was huge, coming down right above the car. She describes the color as "the colors you see when oil is floating on the water." Iridescent colors? My dad remembers her saying, and she remembers telling him to "stop the car! We're going to crash into it!" She said it came down, through the wind shield, and totally enveloped the car. Mom says she closed her eyes & screamed and pulled me in close. She says dad told her to be quiet.

Dad says he kept driving but for a few seconds this colorful, bright light filled the entire car. Then the light disappeared. Dad doesn't know if he drove through it or if it just disappeared.

Mom was shaken up, I never cried or reacted. Dad said it was some type of "gas." Mom says, "How does gas come down from high up in the sky to the ground in a ball shape?" It's a family mystery.

Thank you for letting me share it here.

Witness indicates that the date of the event is approximate. PD
