Odd light that appeared as the shape of a spotlight which changed color

My family lived on a small farm in Jackson Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. This sighting was by two individuals: myself, who was 15 years old at the time, and my grandmother, who was 77 years old then. My grandmother lived the vast majority of her life on the farm and had not traveled much; at the time, I also had not traveled very much outside of the area.

This sighting occurred at approximately 11pm on a random weeknight in July 1992. That summer in Pennsylvania was cool, cloudy, and rainy, a result of the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines the previous year. The day the sighting occurred had similar weather, so I am certain what was sighted was not a star, planet, or other “normal” heavenly body.

I was about to go to sleep that evening, and walked into the kitchen of our house to get a drink of water and take a Tylenol — I had a minor headache. The window of our house’s kitchen faced north-northwest. The window was open to let some cool night air in. As I was drinking water, I looked out the window. About a mile away and 1,000 or so feet in the air was a light in the sky. It resembled a streetlamp or a light pole seen in the parking lot of a shopping center. It had two lamps that emitted light; one was brighter than the other, and neither were facing in my direction. The color of the lights were clearly gold. It was not moving and there was no noise whatsoever. I saw it for about 30 seconds, realized that it was unusual, then left the kitchen to wake my mother to tell her about it.

As I was walking toward the bedroom, I heard a noise that sounded vaguely like that of a jet engine, but sounded different — I cannot explain in what manner it was different, only that it was. I entered the bedroom and tried to wake my mother; my brother was only 3 months old at the time, and I was trying to be quiet. I whispered “there’s some weird light out there”, and my mother replied “go back to sleep, you’re dreaming”.

At that point, the telephone hanging on the kitchen wall rang. I left the bedroom and returned to the kitchen to answer it. On the other end was my grandmother, who lived about 300 yards north, whose living room window faced in the same direction. She had been watching the TV just below the window, saw the light, and called me. She asked if I saw the light; I told her I had. She said she would put the phone down to see if it was still there. She returned a minute or so later and told me it was gone. According to her, it hovered in the sky for at least an hour and changed colors — it was red, green, blue, white, and finally gold. She watched it the entire time before she called me.

The next day, I called the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre International Airport and reported the sighting, and also asked if anything else was seen the previous evening. The person there told me no, but that there were all kinds of aircraft out there, and it could have been something.

In the years since, I have traveled extensively, and have not seen anything even remotely similar to this object — aside from seeing the exact same object again about a month and a half later. I will submit that sighting as a separate report.
