A friend and I saw a silent swooping reflective object fly past into clouds, then back again ascending out of sight.

My friend and I were on the roof of my 10 story apt building (near Montrose Beach off of Clark St.) stargazing on a mostly clear night when we both saw a silent swooping object pass our vision, travelling from the NW towards the SE. Its movement just reminded me of a frisbee flying overhead and it was hard to tell how far away it was overhead. It seemed to reflect the color of the city light below, not so much as emitting any light. We watched it ascend into a cloud cluster that could have been so far as being South of Chicago. Several seconds later it emerged from the clouds and crossed our path again, the way it had come, then shrank upwards out of sight. I should note that on its way back I stood up and waved my hands and lit lighter and yelled at it and my friend panicked and begged me to stop. Neither of us had cell phones back then to take pictures unfortunately.
