Brilliant white light in SW Sky stationary over 7 minutes then vanishes. Not an airplane!

Exited rear door of my house. Observed brilliant white light in SW sky. Initially thought was a heavy Jet but was stationary. I positioned myself placing the object directly over a roof peak on a out building. The object was not moving. I observed it about 5 minutes. I called my wife and children out to look. I sent my wife into the garage to get a telescope to have a closer look. As I was calibrating the scope, my wife said it simply vanished. It was visible about 5-7 minutes but I am not sure how long it was there before I saw it. We did notice very slight movement down toward the horizon. Object was about 20 degrees elevation and SW direction moving very slightly SW. The magnitude was 100x the brightness of the brightest star or planet. A brilliant white like a halogen bulb. There were colors like the rainbow shining downward at 8 and 4 o'clock positions. It was impossible to judge the distance but I would guess it was below any orbit and 50! + miles away. I am an Airline Pilot for a major Airline. I know what civil and military aircraft look like. This was nothing I have ever seen before.
