Upper atmosphere object moving south, becoming stationary and later moving east at a high rate of speed.

While standing on a friends back deck, I happened to glace toward the southern sky and observed what appeared to be a fast moving satellite moving north in the upper atmosphere. I noted the object at about the 9 o’clock position in the southern sky and continued to observe the object until the eleven o’clock position. What I though was a satellite abruptly stopped and remained in a stationary position for approximately fifteen seconds. I was shocked! The object then moved at a higher rate of speed heading east and disappeared about 15 seconds later. This has been bothering me since the event and wanted to report this incident to someone who would understand. If you were aware of my background and current position, you would understand my concern about reporting this unusual event. I know the object was under intelligent control and NOT man made.
