Glowing orange/red object, seemingly traveling at a slower speed, definitely NOT a plane

It was a glowing orange/red light floating across the sky. We were initially facing North and watched it travel over ours heads in a southerly direction.

Rather than disappearing into the southern horizon, the object continued traveling at a 40 degree angle, eventually disappearing out of sight.

The object's speed was that of a slower airplane and its elevation was below the clouds yet no discernible features were visible.

It was slightly larger than a typical lighted plane.
