Light the color of fire floating in the sky

There isn't much to say, my mother called me outside when she saw the light. It was floating around the way a helium balloon would with a consistent medium brightness, about 250m up. Then, it stopped moving and elevated as an commercial airplane approached. As the two got closer the mysterious light dimmed. When it became almost invisible in the night sky, it flashed white, then disappeared.
