Occurred: 2011-03-09 20:00 Local
Reported: 2011-03-31 10:30 Pacific
Duration: 3 minutes
No of observers: 2

Location: Maze District, Canyonlands National Park, UT, USA

Shape: Light
Characteristics: Lights on object

Bright, constant, light moving quickly from the Western to Eastern horizon over Utah emitting no noise.

On March 9th, 2011 at approximately 8:00 pm Mountain Time we were camped in the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park in Southern Utah. 8:00pm is an approximation because we did not have watches. We were sleeping outside looking up at the stars when we noticed a large, bright, yellowish orange light moving from West to East in the Southern sky. The light was constant, meaning it did not blink. It moved at the speed of a lower flying commercial aircraft, but emitted no noise. It travelled at a constant speed and we watched until it disappeared on the Eastern Horizon.

We have both seen hundreds of satellites in our lives and this was definitely far too bright, moved too quickly, and appeared to be too close to be a satellite. It was especially odd that it made no sound. We had seen many planes, and every single one even those at large distances and heights were very noisy due to the remoteness of the wilderness we were camped in.

NUFORC Note:

The timing is correct for a sighting of the International Space Station. PD
