bonfire ufo in the sky

Me and my friend were driving down the road in a kind of rural area and he told me a few days ago that he saw what he described as what looked like a "bonfire" in the sky that he saw with a friend that they got closer to before it slowly disapeared and i was interested by this and then sure enought around 7pm it was sunset but there wasnt any stars out whatsoever but i spotted a bright dot which i first blew off as it being jupiter because it is visible this time of year but i kept watching it ans it was really low to the ground maybe 300 to 400 feet, but it was pretty hard to judge but it seemed like we were getting closer to it before it eventually began to become transparents before it disapeared.
