Cloud-like saucer moving over Manhattan early morning 9/9/10

A little after midnight this morning (9/9/10), my wife and I were on our balcony which hangs over the Hudson River in Weehawken, NJ. We were looking at the Manhattan skyline right across the river (approx. 38th street) just North of Empire State Building. The night sky was completely empty of clouds, but I noticed what originally looked like a cloud moving North to South across the NYC skyline. It looked to be only a few hundred feet over the tops of the highest buildings. It was moving with more speed than I have seen a cloud move but slower than the speed I usually see helicopters move at over the city. There was very little if any wind. Although it had a greyish/white cloud-like look, it was formed in a somewhat distinct shape...close to what the hokey UFO saucers are depicted as. I watched as it crossed behind the highest building in my direct line of sight and it seemed to either dissolve or head away from me (toward the EAST) rather than continue along! the same North to South route it had been on. The entire sighting lasted about 2-3 minutes.
