strange moving lights that can't be satalites

from the east we saw a light that looked like a star and was moving towards the south. it was some what dim then brightened up. it moved for several seconds all lit up. then it zig zagged a bit, then dimmed and shot up into space until we couldn't see it any more.it's not the first time we have seen these.
