4 strange lights seen

Last night, just after we arrived home, my eldest son pointed at the sky and asked "Mum, what is that?" There were four lights. They would meet in the middle and then spread out into a cross. They repeated this pattern. They moved slowly and gracefully. At first, I thought they may have been some kind of animal but the repeated pattern ruled this out. I've never seen anything like it. I don't know what it is. We don't live near any kind of business or organization that may need some kind of spot light.
