Two stars, one bright the other dimmer moving from North to south very close together on 9/11/04 8:40PM

I was sitting in my girlfriends backyard by a fire pit, I looked up and saw what I thought was a bright star, it was moving from north to south straight up above me. I thought it was the International space station but I knew it did not move from north to south like that. As I watched it I then saw a second but not as bright star following it, It lasted less than a minute in duration and then faded away. I know it was not aircraft. I never have been one to believe in UFO, but this was weird. About 10 mins. later the International space station did go by from the southwest to the northeast. Please can someone tell me what this was.
