A single green light going very fast and disapearing

This happened on a clear night, in south Manhattan - Low in the sky appeared a green light going at rocket speed and disapearing after less than 3 seconds - this is the first time I see an "object" flying that fast. It looked like the same speed as a shooting star. The light was bright, and green, the same green as in a regular plane, except that no noise could be heard and the light went off as the object was still in a visible distance. But despite a clear moon, once the light went off, I could not see the object at all. Again the whole occurence took less than 2 or 3 seconds.
