Lights changing luminosity and direction above the horizon in ways not normally capable by aircraft
While in flight at 43,000ft on a heading of 292, i saw a light getting brighter and dimmer to our right. Initially I thought it was the relative motion of a shooting star heading our way nearby. The light dimmed, and then reappeared again but moving diagonally, slowing and speeding up, and changing directions. It then dimmed again. I informed my First Officer to take a look, and initially he saw nothing. After about 2 minutes two lights became visible, moving towards and away from each other and changing both direction and speed. They would stop in place and then start moving again before dimming, and move horizontally and then turning to a vertical motion at what looked to be a 90 degree direction change. The lights would be orange and then as they got brighter change to more of a white light before dimming. My FO informed me he also saw what i was looking at and we informed ATC and asked if there were any aircraft or events happening to the north on a bearing of about 330-350. They replied that no aircraft were in that direction. The lights were observed moving in the area around the star Phecda of the Ursa Major Constellation. That was our reference at the time.
