Mom and I looking out of airplane window, most people had their window shades down and sleeping after midnight

The plane took off from LAX flew over the Pacific Ocean, as usual, before turning and heading inland to our destination. We were shocked to see the giant (think football field) sized dark cylindrical shape with lights along the bottom of the craft pulsating from red on one end to blue as they flashed along the bottom. It was motionless. It was not on the coastline. It was as high up as we were. We were afraid and started praying. We didn't say anything to anyone. Eventually our plane diverted back over the mainland to our destination. We watched it until we couldn't see it anymore. It was not the Goodyear Blimp, it was at a high altitude and much larger and not moving. There were no windows that we could tell and we always talked about it to each other.
