Brief memory of very large disc soaked UFO with lights in sky above me
I remember being 9 or 10 years old, so the summer of either 1995 or 1996. I was outside in my backyard, lying on a small grassy hill and looking up at the stars. The sky was clear, and I was alone.
At some point while stargazing, I suddenly became aware of a large, disc-shaped object hovering above me, above our house, and possibly over the street. The object appeared large, dark and metallic, with a series of large, round lights around its base, accompanied by smaller lights. It matched the classic description of a “flying saucer.”
I remember watching the object as it moved slowly eastward. My memory of the event is fragmented — I do not remember seeing it arrive, nor do I remember it disappearing. My memory simply stops after I saw it moving away.
I did not speak to anyone about the sighting at the time, thinking it might be dismissed as a dream or my imagination. I questioned the experience for many years. Even in my regular moments of doubt there was something in me that kept loudly saying “I know it was real.”
In 2013, I had a conversation with a neighbor who lived across that street from my childhood home. He mentioned that during the summer in the mid-1990s, his wife (since passed) witnessed a large, saucer-shaped object hovering over our property along the side where we had that grassy hill. She saw a beam of light coming down from it, which she described as looking like an “upside-down Roman candle.” She was so frightened that she ran back upstairs without further observation, and told her husband. It was gone by the time he looked out the window.
I had not shared my story with my neighbor before him telling me this. I had goosebumps as he finished, and I then retold my vague but profound memory of that long-ago summer. We both stared at each other in shock.
This conversation strongly reinforced my belief that what I experienced was real, as it confirmed that someone else witnessed the same or a similar object at the same location, around the same time. If I ever have a chance to talk to that old neighbor again, I will ask him if he recalls exactly which summer. I remember him saying there were a lot of sightings/activity in our area that summer.
