2 Red lights hovering together, then separating in different directions at immense speed.

My wife and I were out walking one night in November 1983. Not to sure of the date and time but Mid November and after 10pm. We were at a point on the north side of Scarborough UK called Rutland Terrace, just outside the Norbreck Hotel. We were stood at the railings looking out to sea and were intrigued by 2 very bright red lights in the night sky hovering over the sea. They were large lights approximately 5 feet in diameter and looked to be about 10-15 feet apart. They were hovering totally silently in a static position maybe 200 - 300 feet high. To us they also appeared to be fixed together as if they were on ether side of a large object. A third person unknown to us joined us to watch these strange lights, and he to was somewhat baffled by their behaviour. This encounter lasted for a good 5 minutes or more and then the most amazing thing happened.

The 2 lights that we thought to be one unknown craft then separated and travelled at immense speed in different directions. One shot off West over the Castle headland to our right while the other shot off a the same immense speed North over the sea towards Whitby. It was only a matter of a second or two before we lost sight of it. I know we have no technology to hover and then move at such speeds, so we all said in an astonished yet strangely matter of fact way that we had just seen an alien UFO.
