I wanted to get this on record for years but just learned of this reporting site. I was in junior high, back in the mid-70s, when it happened. We were traveling in our Winnebago, heading north on I-77. As we came upon a lake, there it was—this massive UFO, at least half a mile long, hovering silently above the water. It wasn’t like it suddenly appeared. It was just there as we drove closer, suspended in the air. Military helicopters circled around it, looking tiny in comparison, like they didn’t know what to do with it. We turned on the CB radio, and the chatter was wild—truckers and other travelers were all talking about it, as confused and stunned as we were. We drove by it slowly, and it took what felt like forever to pass. The thing was enormous.
