In short, big round cylinder light was coming from sky, no sound

I was delivering newspapers and got to 5th and moline st, and watched a huge cylinder shaped light shine down on one house at a time jumping from house to house. It was greenish yellowish in color. There was no sound, and it went up as high as I could see. It scared me terribly so I went around the corner, got to my house, ran inside and woke my dad. He kept insisting it was xmas lights, but it wasn't, it was totally different to anything I have seen to this day.
