I saw a dark basketball sized sphere passing my window while flying a small plane.

I was flying a small (4 seater) plane and saw a dark, basketball sized sphere on my side of the aircraft. It did not seem to be floating or stationary, but had a constant altitude and velocity going directly past me. It seemed to be less than 30 feet away at about the same altitude as my plane. When I laid eyes on it, it was moving fairly quickly, maybe 60 knots. I immediately asked my flight instructor who was with me what it was, but it had passed my window and we couldn’t see it from the back window behind us.
