Small dark object moving through the sky with speed

I heard a small single engine plane in the sky and was looking for that just outside my building. That is when I noticed the small dark object high in the sky moving northeast and appeared to be gaining in elevation. It was moving fast from my perspective and made some quick directional changes as it seemed to approach clouds higher in the sky. It was small and dark and was in my sight for about 60 seconds or less. Sun was out and this was easy to see even though it seemed far away. I was asked by my co-worker if I thought it was a drone and I do not think they go that high in elevation where I believed it to be.
(I did find the single engine plane headed southwest and at a low elevation and was probably a local pilot)
