Quite windy with very low cloud base the likes of which I had never seen before except in Close Encounters

As we got close to the cliff edge I saw a stationary orange difused light in the clouds followed by 2 others, then 3 and they appeared to be moving about in the clouds. They seemed to be putting on a show for us as 1 or 2 would move and be replaced elsewhere by others. Then, 7 objects appeared which were white lights coming from the direction of Filey. These were the same height, distance apart and speed, moving quite fast out at sea, until they were right in front of us, when, at the same time they went backwards and upwards at a speed we had never seen before. The following day I checked with the coastguard who said there was no other reports of sightings but that it could have been afterburners of military aircraft however, upon checking, there were no aircraft manouvers that evening. It has been years of wondering but we both knew what we had seen and I have only just found where to file a report after all this time.
