Elongated triangle with lights went over from south to north, completely silent, craft was long- a few hundred yards at least

I was walking home at approx 10pm one night from a youth group( which finished at 930pm) in the mid to Late seventies- 1976 to 1980 -sorry can't remember exact date but the group was always held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, I was walking past the horse racing track and looked up to see an elongated triangle - several hundred yards long with different coloured lights at one end-(in shape of a triangle) and on its sides.

The craft was low as it went over the race track buildings and was completely silent, speed was less than 100mph. It headed from south to north, as I was only a young teenager at the time I didn't hang around and ran the rest of the way home. Duration of sighting was approx 1 minute. This is the first time I have reported this and there were no other reports of it at the time in local news outlets.
