Small red lights circling around a large green football object

In July of 2003 around maybe 8:30-10pm a friend and I were walking around a sod farm near his apartment complex in middle island, new york not far from artist lake. We sat down along the north side of the field near the tree line. At some point I noticed a small red dot shoot out in the sky from behind my friends head. I looked around and noticed another. When I told him he got up and turned and said "forget the little red guys, look at that one over there" and sure enough, further to the east on the opposite side was a huge green football shaped object with a slight dome look on top.

It had small red diamonds along the center axis going horizontally. The green coming off of it didn't seem to have a source, it just sort of glowed green like one of those glowing jellyfish. It sat stationary for a while and then slowly started going to the east, then west then back again. It made no noise that we could hear. The red balls were zooming around the sky like they were playing a game. They would fly seemingly right into the larger green object and come flying back out. Then zip around and do it again. They seemed to move effortlessly. Like speedy butterflies.

It was difficult to estimate its size as it was hovering over the tree line a good bit but we had no reference to distance. But even if it was only 200 yards behind the tree line it would still have been very large. Like the size of a football field. We watched it for at least an hour, maybe more. It would stay still and then suddenly jolt one way or another and stop again. We started seeing atv's driving around the outside of the field and then a helicopter came right overhead with an incredibly bright light. It spooked us and we double timed out. Its private property and we didnt want trouble. Plus the helicopter really buzzed by super low and nearly blinded us. The noise from the 4-wheelers and the helicopter was jarring after the dead silence we both sat in for so long, and they all showed up quite suddenly. It freaked us out a little bit.

When we got out we tried to figure out what we just witnessed. We walked back to his apartment discussing what it might have been. A blimp? Who the hell is flying a glowing green blimp around? There was no way a blimp could move like that. A blimp turns, it stays at a certain range of speed. This thing was just jumping one direction to the next while never changing its shape from our perspective. And what were the little red balls flying around it? We could still see it on the west side of the field from the apartment. We didn't see it leave, at some point it was just gone.

I was just blown away while my friend was somewhat less impressed saying he'd seen all sorts of weird things in that field. The odd thing was that day in general was just...strange. There was something in the air, I don't know how to explain it. It was only through a series of bizarre events that we even ended up in that field that night. I've heard some people talk about "high strangeness" associated with ufo sightings and I have to go ahead and throw my experience into that hat. The whole event was really something else.

I didn't mention this to my friend or anybody else that I told this story to (which aren't many because honestly I'm sure it sounds crazy), but while we were watching this thing float around I felt like it "knew" we were watching. I almost felt like it could understand my thoughts. I regret not asking my friend if he had felt the same. I just felt as if it "checked our heads" and concluded we were "cool" and we weren't going to freak out and that we thought it was awesome. I realize how insane that sounds, trust me. I even remember saying "hey bros come down and hang out!" and feeling a sort of "response" of something that "felt like" laughter. I find it hard to put into words. It was really something otherworldly and I still can't believe it happened to me. Nothing ever happens to me.

But we never heard anything on the news, nobody we knew said they saw anything. There is a high school or a junior high school or something very close to where it was. You would think there would be more witnesses. It's not like I scoured through ufo reports at the time, so maybe someone else did. I just thought since there seems to be less of a stigma surrounding talking about these things, I'd at least submit a report about it somewhere. I lost contact with the friend I was with that night, but if asked, I remember his name.
