NUFORC Sighting 138793

Occurred: 2018-02-05 05:30 Local
Reported: 2018-02-05 13:46 Pacific
Duration: 5 minutes
No of observers: 1

Location: Porto Alegre (Brazil), , Brazil

Shape: Flash
Characteristics: Lights on object

In Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, at 5:30 am in my house, when I woke up, I opened a window that faces southeast and I saw a flare of light near the constellation of the Crux, I thought until it was a flare of some Iridium satellite headed south, the light disappeared, but seconds later there was a new flare and with non-regular intervals of a few seconds new flares followed, but then the source of these lights changed direction and began to go east. I could observe that when the strong light was off, sometimes I could see two very weak points of light very close to each other and associated with the source of the flares.

The light was slightly yellowish and the flares of variable intensity were brighter than the alpha-centaur star that was nearby and one of the flares was much more brighter than the venus glow. The speed of travel was very slow, with no noise whatsoever, it seemed to be at an altitude far superior to that of jet planes.

I followed the displacement of the source of the light until it disappeared definitively when arriving at the constellation of the Scorpion. I have had dozens of years of observation as an amateur astronomer and have never seen anything like this with such peculiar behavior. It was certainly not an airplane, not a helicopter, not a balloon and even less a drone. All the observation lasted about five minutes.
