Bright light near castle Nideggen, Germany in the 90s

I was standing with a good friend on the old castle of Nideggen which is close to the town I grew up in. It is also very close the town of Schmidt, which was a terrible battlefield in WW2 (known as Hell Huertgen forest).

We were standing on the shorter one of the two towers left over (which is not complete and not very high). My friend was standing with his back towards the "Ruhr" river valley and I was facing him.

I was seeing the valley from my position. It was already dark but not pitch black. Suddenly the clouds got very bright white in a large area and a round white shining object came out and flew into the ruhr river valley in an angle of about 45 degrees (very fast). For a second I thought it was some kind of shooting star that happens to hit the ground a few miles in the river valley.

But just before it hit the ground, it suddenly changed direction and was coming directly towards us. It didn't take more than 1 second for it to fly the approx. 1.5 miles from the spot it changed direction.

Not far away from us (shortly before it hit us), it suddenly dissolved into nothing. Everything happened very quickly and I was so shocked that I wasn't even able to tell my friend. I didn't even tell him afterwards about it because I was afraid he would think that I was insane. He didn't notice anything it seems. I didn't make any sounds.
