Stange lights, low level jet fighter interceptors? and a bright flash.

At about 9:10pm EDT we heard a very loud airplane jet noise, as if a jet plane was flying over the Island at a VERY low altitude. It grew very loud, and many people thought it might be a tornado. It faded, then came back even louder, almost as if circling the Island. People on the north side of the Island report seeing a bright flash, some reported seeing strange airplane lights and jet lights, then the jet noises faded. Several reported seeing airplane lights. There was some severe weather 30 miles north, in DC, but it was mostly clear down here, so I don't think it was weather. My theory: jet intercept of something approaching Washington, DC, and the flash were afterburners of the jets?
