A bright moving star in the sky?

I'm not exactly sure what I have been seeing but I have caught it on multiple occations now. The latest occurence happened last night around 10pm. I went outside to relieve myself and was looking up at the night sky through the branches of the trees. One of the brighter "stars" caught my eye, as it was not only bright but also twinkling.

As I was watching this light, I noticed that I was actually moving in the sky, but not in straight lines. It would smoothly glide across the sky and come to a halt. I also noticed movements similar to "figure 8s" It would sometimes just sit up in the sky and not move for a while. In addition to "twinkling" it would also get brighter and sometimes fade out completely.

As an experiment, I would line up the "star" with my fixed line of sight, so that I could see the light through the tree branchs, then I would watch as the light would move from "behind" the branches and move around the sky some more. I was able to watch this on several occations throughout the night. The "star" was spotted in the southwest skies. Just to make sure I wasn't going crazy, I made my roommate watch the light and she was able to watch the same thing as me.

Last night there was only one of these, but 3 nights ago, I was able to see 3 of these things in the sky, relatively close together. What are these? If anyone has the answers, Im certainly open to hearing them. Thanks!
