Red lights over the Atlantic Ocean

On Wednesday night of June 15th, I went to the beach on Ocracoke Island NC to watch the full moon rise with three friends. The sky was fairly clear and the humidity was low. The ocean was almost calm. The waves were very small.

I am not sure of the exact time, it may have been at about 9:15ish that one of my friends saw a small red light that looked like it was slowly descending toward the water, then it disappeared. I did not see that one. It did not last long. She thought it was odd, but probably explainable.

About 10-15 minutes later, all four of us saw one large bright red light suddenly appear under the moon, due east over the water about halfway between the moon and the horizon right under the moon. I'm estimating the moon to have risen to about 30 degrees above the horizon.

Then about 2-3 seconds later another large red light appeared beside and to the left of the first light. It was the exact same size and intensity of light. They both stayed in the same spot without changing in size, intensity or location for about 8-10 seconds, then instantly disappeared.

We did not see any aircraft or hear any sounds.

Proportionally, the red lights appeared to be about 1/20th the size of the moon from our vantage point on the beach.

I am a teacher, one woman is a business owner, one is a secretary and one is currently working in retail.
