erratic light in the night sky

The object was too far away to discern shape, it seemed like a very bright star. I originally thought it was a satellite, because it was slowly moving in the southwest sky. But the light was making eratic movements almost like figure 8's, in every direction. I could not determine what it was which was there for about 5 minutes then gone.????????
